1. Reducing
In these times of troubling economy and environmental instability with the release of greenhouse gases that are heating up our planet, we need to find to minimize our waste and reuse everyday items rather then discarding them. Here are a few green ideas:
2. Reuse
Find uses for items that are broken or misplaced around the home before you discard the item. Plastic utensils that you no longer use in the kitchen that are not dangerous and are safe may be just what your kids are looking for to put in their play kitchen or to goof around in their play-dough set.
3. Recycling
Recycle your usedtennis shoes. Large companies like Nike recycle your used shoes to use in their program that use them to pave new playgrounds for children, thus making it a safer area for kids to play at. Ways in which you can participate is quickly found by doing a search online.
4. Composting
Invest in a compost bin - You can make your own inexpensive and safefertilizer for your garden, rather than tossing your vegetable scraps Homemade fertilizer will make your gardens grow abundantly, and because you have used a natural substance that is free from chemicals, your homegrown fruits and vegetables will be muchhealthier and tastier.
5. Old Clothing
A wonderful thing to do is to join in with your friends and your family for a clothing swap meet, or go out for the day to your local thrift store. By shopping at "thrift" stores you will be helping their organization and you never know what great buys you will find hidden away. There are enough clothing items to keep the planet clothed for another lifetime! In addition, you could use old clothes that are unable to be donated as rags around the house for cleaning jobs, or another idea would be to give them to an animal shelter, where the clothing can be used for .
6. Trading Old Goods
There are numerous programs now online for the sole use of trading old and unwanted household items, sometimes these can be a real score if you know where to find them. Look for ways to trade unwanted items. Post an ad in a trade classification paper or website, and trade items that you do not require anymore with an item that you do require and save money at the same time.
7. Shopping Bags
Think about taking reusable shopping bags with you when you go shopping, or even when you go shopping for clothes or household items. This will be a great way to preserve resources and to save the planet. Paper bags and plastic bags are very unfriendly to the environment, and they contribute to the unnecessary filling of our shrinking landfills and can take a sometimes hundreds of years to breakdown. Although paper bags are mostly recycled themselves, it would be wiser to not have to use them at all.
If you find yourself still using these types of bags, make certain that you do your part and recycle BOTH you paper and plastic bags, as they are accepted in most recycling programs nowadays.
